When I was a student in Chiropractic college, having been a biochemistry major in undergraduate school, and growing up in a pharmaceutically oriented family, I frankly thought that homeopathy was the distilled essence of the placebo effect. Boy was I wrong!
To be sure, from the perspective of a classically trained scientist, homeopathy apparently made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why? To understand this, we have to discuss the basis of Homeopathic medicine as distinct from allopathic (or traditional MD medicine).
Developed by Dr. Christian Frederich Samuel Hahnemann (Pic at left). Homeopathy is widely taught outside the United States. Flower 5th Ave Hospital (NYC) and Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia were homoepathic hospitals until the AMA's purge and persecution of homeopathy around 1920.
If an MD were to take a normal, healthy patient and administer a small amount of a drug as, for example, atropine; the patient would among other effects, have dry mucous membranes and dilated pupils. In contrast, the homeopath, seeing a patient with dry mucous membranes and dilated pupils, would GIVE the patient atropine. But how much? It turns out that the homeopathic dose for any given substance is so infinitesimally small and diluted that there are probably no molecules of the drug, in this case, atropine left in the solution! And, even more surprising, is that according to homeopathic theory, the MORE dilute the remedy, the GREATER the effect. Thus, this flies in the face of a traditional understanding of chemistry and physics, never mind biology.
What is the mechanism by which homeopathic remedies can help you? The truth is no one really knows. Of course there are theories. One of the most recent is that the field of quantum science possibly explain it. And, of course this is why traditional physicians think it’s worthless. So, can it help? And, are there actual studies that show benefits?
The answer to both questions depends on which school of homeopathy is being used. For the classicists, the answer is that there are no good studies showing any benefits, and they have no problem with that, claiming that one cannot subject homeopathy to the gold standard of science, i.e. double blinded, randomized trials.
However, there is a modern school of homeopaths, who combine several remedies in one solution or pill, and are willing to subject their remedies to scientific studies, and wonder of wonders… several studies have recently demonstrated effects significantly greater than placebo for such conditions, as colds, asthma, flus, allergies, diarrhea and and middle ear infections in children, among others. Just recently a study was published in Europe with E Coli diarrhea in PIGLETS! showing that homeopathy was better than antibiotics in reducing this condition. Quite interesting since it is well recognized that placebo effect does NOT occur in animals!
If in doubt, ask your doctor about modern homeopathy. Here at Dr. Press’ offices, we have exclusive access to the modern remedies prepared by H.E., Dr. Robert M. Von Kuefstein, who is a consultant to many of the royal families of Europe.
